XoXo Prince has always been an enigma of sorts with striking and catchy lyricism that still seems to hold a deeper more hidden meaning. We got the pleasure of interviewing him and it was quickly apparent that the man simply exists in lines of poetry - when asked why he chose to pursue music Prince answered:
"In a way, I think music chose me".
In describing himself as an artist, which is admittedly a difficult question to pose let alone answer, Xo thoughtlessly amounted himself to a single word... 'emotion'.
He states, "To be human is to feel." and we instinctively had an 'aha' moment because in the cruising through his work, we can quite confidently conclude that he indeed makes music to be 'felt more than to be heard' as we felt every lyric and artistic exertion in the songs we loved from him.
"Just wasn't tailor made for me"
Now for those who are familiar with "Tailor made" you know firsthand the uncatchable itch that is the line 'just wasn't tailor made for me' but for those in the dark (and in desperate need for new beautiful music), Tailor made is a song that one can safely assume is about a dynamic shift from something being enjoyable to it being addictive and detrimental. Its a song that acknowledges that sometimes you can't separate love from pain, the two come hand in hand but aren't always synonymous .
In talking to XoXo, we asked him what this lyric means and why its so contradictory as the chorus is about how he wants to be her "Tailor made love" but she just wasn't tailor made for him. For context, Prince wrote this song when he was 19 and sat with it a while before releasing it and interestingly enough he wrote it about a "situationship". One would assume that the person being "tailor made" would mean that everything would be perfect but XoXo counteracts this notion by stating that just because its tailor made doesn't mean that you're the only person it will fit.
Finding - What was he looking for?
'Finding' starts off beautifully tranquil as the intro features nature elements such as the birds chirping in the background which leads to us listeners to the assumption that its going to be a sweet and peaceful song. The calm and beautiful rhythm however opposes the lyrics which have a somewhat harsh accusatory tone.
The melody and the lyrics are in contrast just like the yellow sunflower and the red background chosen for the cover art. The contrasting colours in the cover art come together to make a beautiful image which is the same thing he went for with the sound portrayed solely through vocals and guitar. he explores this contrast more when we asked what he was looking for he said "to have essentially means that before you didn't have" which are two opposites that yet simultaneously exist.
XoXo states how he felt like he wasn't really needed in that situation and wasn't given a fair shot. As a listener you get the message that though their love was stagnant their lives are dynamic as they keep growing and changing which gets to a point that having the similarity of "brokenness" wont be enough of a reason to stay together.
Therefore he wants to "find them" again, he wants to find the love that was present before things got too complicated. And in knowing that their on different paths they still try to savor what's left.
This song highlights the value of choosing to keep loving even when the one you love isn't the same, because people are dynamic. In summary were taken back to the contrast of the whole song where love on one end is stagnant and people, the mediums of that love, on the other end are dynamic
